Cabbage Patch Doll

Cabbage Patch doll
Cabbage Patch doll

These dolls have been subject to a great urban myth, regarding this particular toy ,the  story was that cabbage patch kids.

Were created to help the public deal with  birth defects as the result of a nuclear war,  which is like believing that the moon is made out of green cheese.

The inventor of the doll is Xavier Roberts.

Working in soft sculptures in the 1970s . Using hand stitched fabric to produce a variety of expressions for the face of the Soft dolls .

Hand painted details and real clothes, each of the little people he created was a labour of love and highly desirable to doll enthusiasts and collectors.

Roberts skills did not stop at the creation of his new dolls he was also a gifted salesman.

he came up with the idea of adopting a doll rather than buying it.

Dolls were supplied with certificates stating they were not made but born in a hospital.

They didn’t become cabbage patch kids until 1983, when Coleco stepped in to offer mass production techniques.

Making it possible to move 3 million units in the first year of sales, the craze was now in full swing and demand was exceeding production.

Cabbage patch kids are very desirable collectables and a signed doll by Roberts can still fetch $1500.

but on average depending on the doll with its original box.

And can fetch anything from $750-$1000 the dolls have a bigger following in the USA than Europe but they are still collected around the world.

Opera Glasses

Opera glasses

 Opera Glasses
The telescope was invented in the early 1600s and by the 18th-century optical devices were being produced for many different purposes.

The popularity of the theatre and opera led to the creation of decorative glasses.

In the 18th century the monocular or spyglass, predominated, followed in the 19th century by the paired monoculars which evolved into the opera glasses as we know them today, they were developed in Paris in the 1820s.
 Opera Glasses

The difference between opera glasses and binoculars is both strength and declaration.

Opera glasses really magnify more than four times but  binoculars can magnify it times and more.

Binoculars are designed to be practical and durable, where opera glasses were function accessory and could be beautifully decorated.
 Opera Glasses

Price depends on materials and condition, whether or not they have the original case as this can enhance interest and also suggest that the instruments have been well looked after.

 Opera Glasses
The maker is also important, Paris produced some of the finds manufacturers of this popular access very of the day there are many engraved decorated porcelain covered examples available on the market I have also come across a lot of copies Serratia thinking about investing a large sum of money.

I strongly recommend some research and seek as much provenance as possible.

Pelham puppets

Pelham puppets

Pelham puppets

Pelham puppets was founded by Bob Pelham in 1947 after his wartime service.

The earliest puppets came in brown boxes complete with flying pig logo a reference to a comment from bob pelhams father who, although he’d helped finance the setup of the business said that pigs will fly before Bob makes a success of it.

By 1950, however, over 40,000 puppets have been sold and Bob had started the popular pelpup club, in order to encourage children to become involved in puppetry.

Pelham puppets flourished in the 1950s and 60s but by the late 70s business was in decline and the original company closed down in the 1990s.

Boxers are useful tool dating puppets, a brown cardboard box was used until 1956 when it was replaced by a solid yellow cardboard box.

Pelham puppets
Examples from the 1950s featured and illustration of the mad Hatter on the side, but in 1962 the artwork was changed and it became a picture of a snake charmer.

As cellophane window was added to the yellow box in 1970 and this enables the pulpit to be seen from the outside.

Prices into today’s market have dramatically declined , I have seen 1970s puppets boxed in mint condition selling at car boot sales for £20 $30, the best examples, at the moment to buy for investment are the Disney related character puppets
