Coca-Cola syrup was developed in America in 1886 by Atlanta pharmacist John S Pemberton.

And was initially intended as an over the counter medicine to be taken makes with water the following year carbonated water was added to the mixture and Pemberton sold his interests in the company and in 1891 fellow  druggist Asa  g Candler became the sole proprietor of Coca-Cola for an investment of just over $2300 approximately £1200.








The drink was marketed for pleasure as well as for health and sales boomed, rising from 1300 gallons per day in 1901  to 11,500 gallons in 1910.

As well as supplying the beverage to soda fountains, Coca-Cola began producing bottled coke from the 1890s so that customers could take the drink home.

In the early years a range of different bottles were used, but in 1915 the root glass company came up with the famous  hobble  or skirt bottle, allegedly inspired by the line drawing of a coca pod, which went on to become one of the most recognisable designs in the world.

From the earliest years, heavy advertising contributed to the success of the brand.





Tin trays were supplied to soda fountains and drugstores and the earliest recorded example dates from 1897.

However condition is crucial to the value and buyers should also take care as many reproductions have been manufactured since the 1970s.
